Installed along the 2-Wire path, it safeguards the controller and all connected field devices from damaging electrical surges caused by lightning or other transient voltages. The IVM-SD must be grounded to a copper-clad rod or plate, and should be installed every 500 ft or every 15 field devices—whichever is less. It is an essential component for maintaining long-term system reliability and protecting against costly equipment damage.
